Aga Khan University Hospital



The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi, established in 1985, is the primary teaching site of the Aga Khan University’s (AKU) Faculty of Health Sciences. Founded by His Highness the Aga Khan, the hospital provides a broad range of secondary and tertiary care, including diagnosis of disease and team management of patient care. The hospital’s multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and care ensures a continuum of safe and high quality care for patients – with all services under one roof.[citation needed]
The hospital promotes the Aga Khan University's objective of promoting human welfare in general, and the welfare of the people of Pakistan in particular, by disseminating knowledge and providing instruction, training, research, and service in the health sciences.Aga Khan University is Pakistan's largest private medical institute and hospital.[citation needed]

AKUH has 560 beds in operation and its in-patients have the region’s lowest average length of stay of 4.0 days. The hospital is equipped to diagnose and treat medical (including cardiac), surgical, obstetric and gynecology, pediatrics and psychiatry patients.[1]A total of 560 beds, 122 Private and 117 Semi-Private air-conditioned rooms, 251 General Ward beds and 52 special care beds are available in ICU, CCU and NICU.[1] The Hospital has 11 main Operating Theaters . In addition to these, there are 4 Operating Theaters in Surgical Day Care and 1 in Obs/Gyn. Day Care Surgeries are performed at AKUH.[1] State-of-the-art Pharmacy, Radiology (including nuclear medicine), Laboratory, Cardiopulmonary, Neurophysiology and Physiological Measurement services are available at AKUH. To facilitate public accessibility and convenience, AKUH Laboratory operates 47 phlebotomy or specimen collection centers in Karachi and all major cities of Pakistan.[1]

Dow University of Health Sciences

The Dow University of Health Sciences (initialsDUHS), is one of the oldest public research university located in urbanmetropolitan area of KarachiSindhPakistan.[2] The university comprises two leading health sciences undergraduate research institutes: Dow International Medical College and Dow Medical College . University also has a very strong department of Postgraduate studies which monitors various basic medical sciences and clinical sciences programs at DUHS.
Established in 1945, it is known for its strong emphasis on biomedicalhealth, and medical research programmes.[3] It is one of the premium institution of higher learning in Pakistan, and ranked among one of the top medical schools by HEC in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.[4] The university is named after its founder, Sir Hugh Dow, who laid the foundation of the institution in 1945.[5] The institution offers undergraduatepost-graduate and doctoral programmes in almost all academic disciplines relating to medical sciences.[3]
Dow University of Health Sciences has introduced teaching and learning methodology which facilitates students to become skilled lifelong learners. Dow University of Health Sciences strives for its students to develop better communication skills to communicate with their patients and prepare its students for a meritorious professional career.
Major initiatives were personally taken by Ishrat-ul-Ibad (the Governor of Sindh) for the establishment of the Dow University of Health Sciences. He is a Dow Graduate. He was elected as member of the provincial assembly in 1990. And later on became Minister of Housing, Town planning, Environment and Public Health Engineering at a young age, due to his dynamic personality. He was appointed as Governor of Sindh in 2002 and eversince is striving to upgrade the facilities of medical education and health care in Sindh
